Mahawilachchiya is a rural village on the border of Wilpattu National Park, the largest wildlife
park in Sri Lanka, and is surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape. It is also the home of
Horizon Lanka Foundation.
Being a rural village, farming is a main occupation for the villagers, who grow rice from their
paddy fields and fruits and vegetables such as pumpkins, breadfruit, mangoes, papayas,
coconuts, jackfruit and more.
The village is blessed with the cleanest air as it is out of the way of city pollution and has so
much natural forestation- needless to say life in the village is healthy, organic and energising.
The villagers and their ancestors have been living in Mahawilachchiya for centuries and have a
deep understanding and connection with the land. They are well practised in the ways of hunter
gathering and using wild plants in a medicinal way, and are more than happy to share their
knowledge with visitors.
Horizon Lanka Foundation is nestled in the heart of Mahawilachchiya, and is an after-school
education programme where children aged 4-16 come after school, on weekends and durinduring
school holidays. It was first set up 18 years ago by an ex schoolmaster who had a vision of
connecting this remote village to the rest of the world via the use of computer technology. It was
the first village in the country to have a computer, and today has about twenty. The school has
equipped the young generation of this village with global understanding, IT and English skills.
The education programme has so far hosted 53 volunteers from around the world who have
taught the students English, Maths, IT, songs, dances, and other aspects of their culture. It is
important for the children to be exposed to life outside of their village as it allows their
understanding and ambitions to grow.
During your stay, should you choose to join us for a while, you will be housed and fed by a local
family and be fully submersed in rural Sri Lanka’s culture. Alternatively, if you require more
privacy and don’t want to stay with a family, we can offer you accommodation in a housed next
to the school for an affordable price. The house has a kitchen, it’s own beautiful garden with a
firepit, and 24/7 Internet access.
Activities that can be arranged while you’re here include elephant and bird watching, visits to
Thanthirimale rock temples, trips to the beach and water reserves, fishing, and overnight stays
in a treehouse. Playing games in the playground and going for bike rides with the kids are also
fun and energising ways to spend your afternoons.

Buddhist Ministry Initiative

With the support of a generous gift from the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, Harvard Divinity School has expanded its offerings in ministerial training to include an eight-year pilot project in the study of Buddhist ministry.

The Buddhist Ministry Initiative at Harvard Divinity School—the first of its kind at a divinity school within a research university—trains future Buddhist religious professionals in terms appropriate to modern, global conditions. Drawing on the strengths of Harvard’s unique faculty resources in the academic study of religion and Buddhist studies, the Buddhist Ministry Initiative coordinates a range of courses on the history, thought, and practice of Buddhism, in Buddhist languages, and in Buddhist arts of ministry. The initiative also supports the field education of Buddhist ministry students in hospitals and other sites of pastoralccare, and offers the insights of Buddhist textual traditions and practices to students from all religious traditions who study ministry at HDS.

egular faculty members and visiting lecturers from Buddhist communities teach courses on pastoral care and counseling, preaching and worship, spiritual formation, social activism, leadership, and denominational polity, highlighting the application of Buddhist principles to socially engaged action in the world. Students in the program also have the opportunity to choose from the many courses offered more broadly at HDS and other Schools at Harvard for their arts of ministry requirements, in such areas as psychology and counseling, education, conflict resolution, community organizing, and leadership development. HDS courses of particular interest to students of Buddhist ministry include courses in the Buddhist studies MTS/ThM area of focus and MDiv arts of ministry courses.

Students preparing for ministry from a Buddhist perspective utilize their master of divinity degree education in support of a wide range of career paths, including community religious leadership; interfaith hospital, hospice, and university chaplaincy; community development and activism; nonprofit management; academic scholarship; and secondary education. The program instills a rich understanding of global issues pertaining to Buddhism and other spiritual traditions and allows for specialized study according to individual interests and aspirations.

As part of the Buddhist Ministry Initiative’s efforts to build connections to Buddhist ministerial movements in Asia, the initiative offers a limited number of special scholarships to Asian students trained in Buddhist traditions and history to attend HDS for one year as a Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Scholar.

The initiative also offers funding to HDS students to participate in learning experiences in Asia related to Buddhist ministry.

Buddhist field education placements

Buddhist ministry students have the opportunity to complete their field education requirements in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, dharma centers, nonprofits, social service organizations, schools, and universities.

International conference on Buddhist ministry

The Buddhist Ministry Initiative convenes international conferences to connect leaders in Buddhist organizations who are engaged in ministerial and educational initiatives relating to Buddhism in the modern world. The conference invites Buddhist clergy and ministers from both Asia and the United States and serve to forge lasting relationships among such movements across the world.

HDS Voices

I was a little worried that I might be the only Jewish student at HDS, but I was quickly welcomed into a pluralistic community of diverse intellectual and spiritual interests. The Jewish Student Association has served as a homebase for my spiritual growth, meeting for text study, conversations on controversial topics, and to celebrate together. රිසි සේ සමරිසි කොරන්න දෙන්න බැරියෙයි කියාපු අපේ ජනාධිපති තුමා, ඒ ගෙනාපූ පත්තිරිකාව බැසියරේ ගලවලා විසික්ක කෙරුවා වගේ උසික්ක කොරලා දාලා හිටන්. හොඳ වෙලාවට සමරිසි සෙට් එක කැබිනට් එකේ ඉඳලා නෑ. නැහ්නන් ඉතින් ආයේ දෙකක් නෑ ලොක්කාගෙන් මඩු වලිග පාර කනවා පන්සලේ හාමුදුර්වෝ පොඩි උන්ට ප්‍රහාරේ එල්ල කොරනවා වාගේ.

ඉතින් මේක කැබිනට් එකට දැම්මාම, එතන කස්ටිය පොඩි ආතල් එකකුත් අරගෙන තියෙනවා. කොහොමත් අපේ උන් පොන්න ඩාන්ස් බල්ලන ආසයි නේ. අද ගොඩාක් ඉවෙන්ට්ස්වල ඒක නැතිවම බැරි දෙයක් වෙලා. හැබයි ඉතින් එහෙම ඇවිල්ලා නටන උන්ද පොන්නයෝ, එහෙම නත්නම් ඒවා දිහා බලලා ආතල් ගන්න උන්ද පොන්නයෝ කියන්න නම් මම දන්නේ නෑ. කොහොම හරි දෙගොල්ලන්ටම පිස්සු කියන එකයි මාතලන්ගේ නම් අදහස. මේ වගේම මාතලන්ට දිරවන්න බැරි එකක් තමයි එක වේලක් කන්න දීලා අබාධිත දරුවන්ගෙන් ආතල් ගන්න එක. මේවා අපි තිරිසන් ගති තාම පෙන්වන කැඩපත්.

කොහොමත් හාමිනේ උයා දෙන බත් එක කෙහෙල් කොලේ ඔතාගෙන ඇවිත් බෙලෙක් පිගානේ තියාගෙන කන ලොක්කා, ඕකට විරුද්ධ වෙන එක අහන්න දෙයක් නෑ. ඒත් ඕක ඕන වෙලා තියෙන සමරිසි සෙට් එකට, මේක එයාල ඉන්න වෙලා

වෙලාවේ ඉදිරිපත් කර ගන්න තරම් ගටක් නැද්දෝ කියන ප්‍රශ්ණෙත් එතනදි මතු වෙනවා ඉතින්. ඒ වගේම මෙතනදි අලි පාඩියේ තියෙන බල අරගලයෙ ඉස්මතු වීමකුත් පෙනෙනවා.

සුජීව සේනසිංහ වගේ මහා රැඩිකල් පොරවල්, ඉඳලා හිටලා නැෂනල් එකේ බැහැලා එන්නේ ඇයි කියලා දැන් හරි පැහැදිලියි. දොස්තර කෙනෙක් වෙච්චි නලින්ද ජයතිස්සටත් මාර සතුටු ඇති දැන්. ඒ දොස්තරට අනුව මේක ලෙඩක් නේ. විප්ලවේ කරන උන්, ධාතු නැති ධාතු කරඬු ඔළුවෙ උඩ තියාගෙන යන්න ගියාම හිපොක්ක්‍රටිස්ගේ “ඕත්” එක ඕක් වෙලා, එයාලා නිකන්ම නිකන් හාල් පාරුවෝ වෙනවා ආයිබන්ඩ…

හැබයි ඉතින් අර රාජිත දොස්තර උන්නැහේ ප්‍රෙස් කොපරන්ස් එකේ කිව්වැහේ, “ලෙට් දෙම් ප්‍රැක්ටිස් ඉෆ් දේ වෝන්ට් ” කියලා, සද්ද බද්ද නැතිව ඉන්න එක තමයි හොඳම දේ. අලි පාටියේ අය ලෝකේ තියෙන මාර එවා මෙහේ ගෙනත් දාන්න කලින්, කොස් කොල ක්‍රෝටන් කොල කන්න වෙච්චි එවුන්ට, හප හපා ඉන්න චුයිං ගන් එකක්කත් දීලා නැති එකේ, ඉස්සෙල්ලා මිනිස්සුන්ගේ බඩ කට පුරවලා ගල් කපන්න බැරිනම් ආප්ප බාගත්තත් මිනිස්සුන්ට අවුලක් වෙන එකක් නෑ. අනික ඉතින් ඔය බටහිර උන් ඇහුවත්, ලීගලයිස් නැති උනාට, ඔහේලටත් වඩා හොඳට ඕවට කප් ගහපු බඩු අම්මට සිරි ලංකාවේ ඉන්නවා ඕයි කියලා, ගුණදාස අමරසේකර වගේ ඇරලා දාන එකයි තියෙන්නේ. හොරා කෑවත් මොකෝ ඕයි රට කන්න නැතිව.

මේ සෙල්ලම් බලන්න ඇන් ජී ඕ කාරයන්ගේ හරි විමෙන් ඉන්ටර්නැසොනල් නෝනලගේ හරි කාමරවලට එබෙන්න ඕනැන්නේ නෑ. අපි පොඩි කාලේත්

ගම්වල ඔය හැම ජාතියෙම සෙල්ලම් තිබුනා. අදත් තියෙනවා. එහෙමෙයි කියලා ඒ මින්ස්සු පිළිකෙව් කලෙත් නෑ, සමාජෙන් කොන් උනෙත් නෑ. අපි පොඩි කාළේ මඟුල් ගෙවල් වල දාන ගෙවල් වලට ආපු සමරිසි උන්, රෑ ජාමේ වෙනකොට හොයා ගන්න නැති උනේ, උන් කෙහෙල් පඳුරුවලට හුජ්ජා කොරන්න ගිය නිසා නෙමෙයි කියලා කුස්සියේ උන්න ගෑණුත් දැන ගෙන උන්නා.

අනික ඉතින් ගමේ පන්සලේ නායක හාන්දුරුවෝ. අපරාදේ කියන්නේ උන්නාන්සෙට ඔය සැක්ස්වල කැටගරියක් තිබුනේ නෑ නිවන් යන්න, ගමේ උපාසක උපාසිකාවන්, දහම් පාසලේ ගුරුවරියෝ, පොඩි කොල්ලෝ කෙල්ලෝ, එතකොට සාමනේර හිමිවරු, මෙච්චරෙයි කියලා උදව් පදව් කොලාද. උන්නාන්සෙ ඕන එකෙක් එක්ක සැක්සපෝන් එක ගැහුවා කිසිම බේදයක් නැතිව. එහෙමෙයි කියලා, උන්නාන්සෙට මක්කත් කියන්න ගියේ නෑ නේ කවුරුවත්. බලු පූට්ටුවලටවත් ගල් ගහන්න එපාය කියලා අපේ වැඩිහිටියෝ අපිට කියලා දුන්නේ..

එතකොට හංදියේ මුදලාලි. උන්නැහේත් එහෙමෙයි කියලා කැටගරයිස් කලේ නෑ. පන් මල්ල ගහගෙන එන ඇලිස්ලා, මැණිකෙලා කඩේ පිලිකන්නෙන් ගොඩ උනේ, ගබඩාවේ ඉස්ටොක් ගන්න නෙමෙයි නේ. මුදලාලිත් එක්ක බඩගාගෙන වෙන මක්කද කොරන්න. කොල්ලන්ට උනත් ටොපි චොකලට් නොමිළේ දුන්නට ඕක දන්සැලක් නෙමෙයිනේ ආයිබන්ඩ… වින්කලේ බාස්, කොල්ලන්ගේ සයිකල් හැදුවේ සල්ලි අරගන්නේ නැතිව. ගණුදෙණුව කර ගත්තේ වින්කලේ පිටිපස්සට ගිහින්.

ඒ ඉතරක්ය පොලේ ගියාම ආ නෝනා බටු ගන්න පලාගන්න කිව්වේ, නාරාහේන්පිට පොලේවත්, දෙල්කඳ පොලේවත් නෙමෙයි නේ බං. ගමේ පොලේ. ඒ මොකෝ වම්බටු කන්න ආස නෝනලා ගැන ගමේ උන් දැන ගෙන උන්නා. ඒ විතරක් නෙමෙයි සමහර නෝනලා බල්ලෝ හදන්නේ ඇයි කියලත් දැන ගෙන උන්නා. කොන්වන්ට් එකේ අය යනකොට ආප්පයක් බාමුද නංගී කියලා ඇහුවේ, මොකෝ එයාල හංදියේ කඩේ රෑට ආප්පා බාන නිසාය. එහෙම එකක් නෙමෙයි නේ. නමුත් වෙන මොකක්ද කේස් එකක් යනවා කියලා කොල්ලොත් දැන ගෙන උන්නා.

අනික පොඩි කෙල්ලෝ කොල්ලෝ කැලේ පැන්නට, ඔය දැන් වගේ ඇතුල් කොට්ටේම යන්නේ නතිව, පිටකෝට්ටෙන් බැහැලා ගලේවට හංදියෙන් මාරුවෙලා යන්නත් දැන ගෙන උන්නා. එහෙම නිදහසක් තිබුන නිසා තමයි, රේප් කේස් අරවා මේවා අහනවත් නොතිබ්බේ. නැත්නම් ඉතින් ළමා අපචාර කේස් විසඳන්න ගිහිල්ලම පොලීසියට වෙන වැඩක් නැති වෙනවා.

ඇයි එතකොට හරක් පට්ටි තිබ්බ උන් වැස්සියෙක් කැලේට දක්කගෙන යන කොට දන්නවා, මේ මස් කොරන්නවත්, කිරි දොවන්නවත් නෙමෙයි යන්නේ පට්ටි දාන්නෙයි කියලා. එහෙම කියලා ඌ සමාජෙන් කොන් උනෙත් නෑ නේ. ඌත් කඩමන්ඩියේ ඉන්න සෙට් එකත් හැන්දෑවට සෙට් වෙනවා, මගුලට තුලාවට, මරණෙට දානෙට එනවා, කිසි අවුලක් නෑ.

මෙව්වා ඉතින් ලෝකය තියෙනකන් කාටවත් නවත්තන්න බැරි ඒවා. ඒ නිසා හෙටත් පනසලේ ලොකු සාධු පොඩි සාදුගේ පුක පලනවා, සර්ලා කොල්ලන්ට ගල් කපනවා. මිස්ලා පොඩි කෙල්ලෝ එක්ක ආප්ප බානවා. නෝනලා බටු අරගෙන යනවා. බේබී ක්‍රීම් සහ බටර් වලට ඉල්ලුමක් තියෙනවා. කොල්ලෝ වැස්සියන් එක්ක පට්ටි දානවා. ගමේ උන් කොටු පනිනවා. උපාසකම්මලා වැට පනිනවා. මුදලාලි කොල්ලන්ට ටොපි චොකලට් දෙනවා. දෙන්න පුළුවන් උන් ඇමති කමුත් දෙනවා, සභාපතිකන් දෙනවා. සෝ වල මේන් රෝල් එක දෙනවා. ඔය වගේ නහුතයක දේ වෙනවා.

ඒ වගේම, ගේ රයිට්ස් LGBT රයිට්ස් අරවා මේවා ලීගලයිස් කොරන්න කලින්, ඕවා කොරන්න ඕන අවයව කෙලින් වෙන්න, තෙත් වෙන්න, ඇහැට කනට දාන එවා නොකර, බඩට මක්කත් දාන්න හිතා ගන්නවා නම් බොහෝම හොඳයි…

Commonway Institute     Creating a World That Works for All     [Note:  This is a truncated, 300 word version of a 750 word article.  For the full version, click here:  http://shariff.commonway.org/feeling-despair-taking-action/ ]   FEELING DESPAIR – TAKING ACTION   I was recently talking to a Commonway supporter whose city had just taken the step of becoming a “sanctuary city” … When I commended him on helping his city take these actions, he sounded depressed.  “It’s not enough.  In the face of all that needs to be done, I sometimes question whether our actions are comprehensive enough to really make a change in how things are going.  Sometimes I feel helpless and hopeless.” “Hopeless and depressed” or “grateful and optimistic” are two emotional states that depend on your perspective.  I am pretty much the opposite of “hopeless and depressed”.  In these crazy times, I am feeling a new sense of solidity and optimism.  My reason has several parts to it: Take Action?  Take WHAT Action? The Women’s March that occurred the day after the Inauguration was impressive.  In city after city, the march organizers reported numbers more than double their expectations.  … Like the Occupy Phenomenon before them, the marchers proved that people want profound change.  … However, it’s a bit harder to transform anger into a positive force for social change. … … From Caterpillars to Butterflies … The problem is that Donald Trump represents the caterpillar.  (And Hillary Clinton represented just a different caterpillar.)  The solution is that we need the BUTTERFLY. We can spend all of our time protesting the dying caterpillar.  (Protest won’t make it die faster.)  Or, we can become the seeds, the “imaginal cells”, of the new, emerging butterfly. And please remember: in the transformation from the caterpillar to the butterfly, THE BUTTERFLY ALWAYS WINS.  A caterpillar never walks out of a chrysalis.  NEVER.  It’s inevitable. Who Are Indigenous Peoples

According to the United Nations, there are approximately 400 million Indigenous people worldwide, making up more than 5,000 distinct tribes. Together we are one of the largest minority groups in the world, spanning over 90 countries. While Indigenous Peoples total only about 6% of the world’s population, we represent 90% of the cultural diversity.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES HOLD 20% OF THE EARTH’S LAND MASS. THAT LAND HARBORS 80% OF THE WORLD’S REMAINING BIODIVERSITY.

DEFINING INDIGENOUS PEOPLES
There is no rigid definition of what makes a group Indigenous, but the United Nations and the International Labour Organization have outlined a few characteristics that usually define an Indigenous group:

● We are descended from the pre-colonial/pre-invasion inhabitants of our region.
● We maintain a close tie to our land in both our cultural and economic practices.
● We suffer from economic and political marginalization as a minority group.
● A group is considered Indigenous if it defines itself that way.

Each Indigenous group is unique. We speak thousands of different languages, and our traditions are as diverse as our lands. However, there are basic principles that all Indigenous communities share. These principles are the foundation of all Indigenous practices, and it is because of them that our economies and our societies are equitable, balanced, and sustainable.

Given that Indigenous lands contain so much of the world’s natural assets, why are we not the wealthiest, healthiest people on Earth?
The answer is clear: we are not simply losing control of our assets, our assets are being stripped from us. At the same time, we are systematically denied access to the legal and political tools to secure our rights. This is the single most unifying issue for all Indigenous Peoples. Regardless of where we live, Indigenous Peoples are suffering from eviction, violence, exclusion, discrimination and disenfranchisement, leading to poverty, health issues, and the destruction of our cultures. Perhaps most detrimental is the widespread perception that we lack the capacity to take care of ourselves. We have been prosperous for the vast majority of our history, and the loss of that prosperity is the only possible result of being completely stripped of our resources and our rights. The same would become of any civilization on Earth if it were to experience the same asset-stripping.

The perception that Indigenous Peoples lack capacity not only leads to further marginalization, it prevents us from working effectively with non-Indigenous partners, and from acquiring the capital to create change for our communities.

THESE CHALLENGES UNIFY US, AND SO DO THE SOLUTIONS

The idea that Indigenous Peoples lack capacity is a myth. Our traditional knowledge and the strength of our social and economic systems have sustained our existence for thousands of years. We are adaptable and powerful, while remaining dedicated to preserving the whole of life on this planet for generations to come. And now, despite oppression, extreme poverty and exclusion from world development, we have begun to build the world’s first global human rights movement.

The tectonic plates of the global economy have begun to shift toward recognizing the rights of Indigenous Peoples. In 2007, the universal Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations. That same year the shareholders of Newmont Mining voted overwhelmingly to include the interests of Indigenous Peoples in their company’s policies, an unprecedented victory for Indigenous rights. Behind these changes is the largest civil rights movement the world has ever seen, and it’s gaining momentum.
